OUR STORY is, above all, a family story.
Our roots stretch back over a century, when the Wainwright family first began trading coal in Ashby de la Zouch as the Ashby Coal Company. In those days, coal was delivered door-to-door by horse-drawn wagon — a tough, honest job that helped keep the town’s homes warm and industry running.
From their earliest memories, the Wainwright brothers were part of the yard. As teenagers, they joined the family business — learning every part of the trade from their father. They stacked coal, led the horses, drove the first small transporters when they came along, and watched the business change with the times. For them, this company has always been more than a job — it’s a lifetime of hard work and pride, woven into the life of the town they’ve never left.
Horses to lorrys
In the years that followed, the brothers built up the fleet from a single horse-drawn cart to the modern fleet of lorries we run today. They’ve seen it all — from delivering coal in the snow to driving heavy loads the length and breadth of Britain. Through it all, they’ve kept the same promise: do the job well, keep people safe, and look after the town that’s looked after them.
Today, even in their 80s, you’ll still find them at the yard — watching over the trucks, chatting with the drivers, and making sure the Wainwright name continues to stand for trust and reliability.
